![]() Steve Ashley South Africa's Tom Jones Steve celebrates his 42th years in the music industry this year. In his early career, Steve sang for the popular 70s band “ The Staccatos”. (Hits Cry to me, Butchers and Bakers and many more) He left SA in 1974 to live and work in the UK where he gained most of his experience. Steve moved into cabaret and joined Alf Herbert's "Maxime Follies" as a singer/dancer. On his return to SA in the 80's he did a substantial amount of TV work. He did the 1st Rock & Roll Revival Show with Dicky Loader for Percy van Rooyen as well as another Rock & Roll show with Dicky Loader and the late Archie Coker. He also did a number of New Years Eve parties for TV with Dennis East, Bobby Louw, Archie Coker and many more artists. Steve appeared with “The Staccatos" in a televised open-air concert in Centurion (Verwoerdburgstad) at the Waterfront. He went on to do a three part TV series on the music of the Beatles with Bobby Louw, Peter Taylor and Kenny Oliver. Steve semi-retired from music in the 90s to concentrate on his business and only did the odd appearance. He is back in the music scene full time. In 2002 Steve took the part of Tom Jones in the show "Sex Bombs" at Carnival City and the Tha Banchu Sun on which he got great reviews. In November 2005 he appeared on "Noot vir Noot" and toured the country with the TV series' road show. He also appeared at Sun City with The Staccatos and at KKNK with Noot vir Noot. Steve recently re-recorded the popular Staccatos song “Cry to Me” on a compilation album called "Regte Egte Country Treffers" with artists like Kurt Darren, Dozi and many more. This album won the award for the best country album of the year 2007. Steve's latest show "An evening with Humperdinck & Jones" took to the stage at the Tusk Casino in Klerksdorp. He has also performed at the Wild Coast Sun and a number of times at the Carousel. He has a dynamic stage personality and despite having a singing style, appearance and voice striking similar to that of Tom Jones, he also has a big repertoire consisting of other hits of the 1950's, 1960's, 1970's and 1980's. Steve has just finished a return run at Carnival City with “An evening with Humperdinck and Jones" to great success. He is one of a few artists that can sing anything from country to Pop/Rock. The new "CRY TO ME" (Country Version) has just been released on the Album "AMERICAN COUNTRY NASHVILLE STYLE" Steve has just recently moved to Bela-Bela but still travel all around the country. Like good wine Steve's Voice just seems to get better with time.
